3 Ways To Create a Healthier Home

Creating a healthier home can seem overwhelming at first but it does not have to be. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the typical home is 2-5 times more polluted than the air right in our backyards. Yikes! Luckily creating a healthier home does have to be complicated. I suggest starting small and keeping it simple. You don’t have to change everything over night, take it one step at a time just like with any other life changes.

There are hundreds of ways to make our homes healthier, however, here are my favorite things to focus on first.

 1. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

The chemicals you clean your home and your laundry with  matter. In one of the Environmental Working Group’s studies, they discovered that the majority of household cleaners contain cancer causing carcinogens and hormone disruptors, and that 53% of cleaners can induce asthma, cause respiratory problems, and even create chemical burns on the skin. In addition to this, there are thousands of ingredients in cleaners that the FDA has not tested for safety. (Scary!) Once I realized this I started looking for alternatives to the products I was using.

You can make the switch by making your own natural cleaners or finding natural alternatives too.

I love Young Living’s Thieves Cleaner Concentrate. I love it because it is 100% plant-based and all natural- so it does not contain any harmful chemicals or additives and it smells great. You can get a bottle of Thieves Cleaner for Young Living for $28 or for $22 if you have a membership. One bottle of concentrate makes (14) 30 oz bottles or (28) 15 oz bottles of cleaner. One bottle lasts a long time with this cleaner. Young Living also carries dish soap, dishwasher soap and laundry soap. Switch out your dry sheets for some dry balls and you are pretty much set.

 2. Use Essential Oils instead of Candles and air fresheners

There are a ton of chemicals in these products that are not good for us to be breathing in. Artificial fragrances can disrupt our endocrine system and add cancer causing chemicals to the air in our homes. Candles and air fresheners also contribute to indoor air pollution because they put off chemicals that have been found to be just as dangerous for us to breathe in as the chemicals that are in secondhand smoke from cigarettes.

Instead try diffusing essential oils. I promise once you start diffusing essential oils you will not miss candles or other air fresheners, plus there are dozens of health benefits to diffusing essential oils, especially if you’re using an ultrasonic diffuser and they give your home those amazing scents without risking your health.

 3. Use Himalayan Salt Lamps

Himalayan salt lamps are another great way to create a healthier home. They help clean and purify the air in your home, help reduce allergies, improve mood, and naturally generate negative ions. Plus they are a beautiful light source and make perfect night lights.

Remember you don’t have to switch everything out over night but I hope this gives you an idea of where you can start on your journey to making your home healthier.
